TOWN BOARD MEETING ] c i MR C. CHAMBERLAIN ELECTED ( CHAIRMAN l it ( TWO NEW MEMBERS WELCOMED I ( ] At the first fortnightly meeting of the newly elected Tahunanui Town Board ( held last evening, there were present. i Messrs C. Chamberlain (chairman'. A. Stagg. J. Logan. C. Palmer, T. W i Roberts, W. Gould and L. Haywood. ( Mr Chamberlain was elected to the position of chairman at a special meet- j , ing of the Board, when the following committees were also appointed : i , Works Committee: Messrs Logan (chairman). Stagg and Palmer. Finance Committee: The full Board.;, Hall Committee: Messrs Logan, Stagg j and Haywood. Mr Haywood was appointed the Board’s representatiye on the Fire j. Brigade. After thanking members for electing I him to the position of chairman for | the ensuing term. Mr Chamberlain welcomed two new members, Messrs Gould and Haywood, both of whom, he felt sure, would do all in their power for the good of the district. WATER SUPPLY In a review of the Board’s activities in the past and the work that lay ahead, the chairman said the largest question which they would have to deal with would be obtaining a water supply for the district, and he trusted that all members would see to it that the best service possible was obtained. The Board was working in close co-opera- ; tion with the Waimea County Council j in this connection and they had to I thank the Council for the manner in ! which it sponsored the interests of the 1 Board at all times. TAR SEALING OF ROADS The tar-sealing of certain roads in the district was a matter which would have to be considered by members. A fund of about £2OO was on hand for this purpose and they would have to make an endeavour to get the work done as quickly as possible. ELECTRIC SUPPLY The district’s electric supply would again be in the hands of Mr Logan, the Board’s representatiye on the Wai- I mea Power Board, whom they had to j thank for the reduced charges made. PUBLIC TELEPHONE Efforts had been made in the past to have a public telephone installed at Tahuna, but these had so far been unavailing. The Board would make further representations in this direction. STORMWATER FROM HILLSIDE A question which had been shelved in the past was the disposal of stormwater from the hillside. This was a question which would have to be attended to. In # conclusion, Mr Chamberlain said that a forward move was needed in ' Tahunanui. There were many improvements to be made, and he hoped that Board members would see that all the necessary work was done. At the same time they would have to see that an unfair burden was not imposed on the j ratepayers. PROTEST TO HOSPITAL BOARD j On the motion of Mr Gould, it was decided to protest to the Hospital Board concerning the increase in the annual hospital levy. The to the Hospital Board this year will be £337. an increase of £6O on the previous year. The chairman pointed out that if the loan proposal for additional buildings at the Hospital was decided on, the levy on local bodies would be further increased next year. However, it was a matter over which they had no control. FLOODING OF MAIN ROAD The «Jcrk reported that no reply had been received to his letter to the Main

Highways Board concerning flooding of the Main road, opposite Rui street. It was decided that the Highways Board be again written to. The Clerk was instructed to write a letter of thanks to Mr E. Bisley for consenting to lend his horses to the Board for use on the grader. As some doubt existed as to whether or not the insurance policy covering members of the Fire Brigade had expired, the Clerk was asked to ascertain the position from the company concerned. The Clerk said that the policy in question could not be found, the chairman remarking that it was most important that the men should be covered. They could not let the present position continue. WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT Reporting on behalf of the Works j Committee, Mr Logan said that slow j progress was being made with the work l at Burrell Park reserve. An offer had i been received for the felling and re--1 moving of trees from properties adjoinj ing the reserve. The Committee recommended that the offer be accepted, i The filling at the reserve was very ! rough, but this would be improved. The i men were trenching round the reserve j for the planting of a hedge. When the j work was completed it was the wish of j the Committee that the No. 5 scheme j men employed on this work be utilised I for cleaning out the ditches in the district. as these were in a bad state. The roads on the flat were standing up to the wear very well, but it was evident that the use of the grader was necessary. The Committee recommended that the Public Works Department be asked to continue the bitumen surface on the new aerodrome road along Muritai street, as lorries conveying spoil to the aerodrome had damaged the latter street considerably. The question of noxious weeds in the district would have to be dealt with. The owners of properties in Parker’s road should be 1 asked to clear the gorse from their | frontages, as this would make it diffij cult for the ditches to be cleared, i Arising out of the report, it was meni tioned that the Waimea County Counj cil’s grader would be made available to ; the Board when it next passed through the district. Mr Logan was asked to ascertain from the Labour Department whether No. 5 scheme men could be used for cleaning ditches. The chairman said that this work was of paramount importance at the present time. On the motion of Mr Gould, it was resolved that all work done by the Board’s works foreman be supervised by the Works Committee, except in lime of flood, when the foreman would be permitted to act on his own initiative. CORRESPONDENCE j Mr A. R. Tuffnell applied for permission to lay a drain, which had been approved by the Health Officer, on the property of D Burns. Permission was granted subject to the neighbouring > boundary line being placed on the plan. An application was received for making an addition to a shed on a property in Muritai street. The matter will be attended to by Mr Stagg. who was appointed the Board's building supervisor. The Waimea Electric Power Board wrote stating that it desired to con- [ tinue the arrangement by means ot which accounts for electricity in the i Tahuna district could be paid at the • j Town Board s office. It was decided to comply with the Power Board's wish. I | Mrs Burrell asked whether the Board i would form an approach to her property if the pipes were provided. It was resolved that the work be done un- • dc r th e supervision of the Works Com- ■ mittee. Accounts totalling £6O 11s were j passed for payment.
