In thanking members for their good wishes Mr Harvey said his greatest reget. was that he was retiring fiorn office befoie the completion of the present liar hour works. Hi* ambition, a* a member was to see Motueka with a "worthwhile harbour." CONSULTING ENGINEER'S REPORT Mr (". Traill reported as follow*: I The work commenced in October 1936. Delays vveie caused at first by the difficulty in gelling supplies; of material, due to the uncertainty of the markets and condition* pievailing at the time. Some Uouble was experienced in procuring suitable plant but these delays are usually met with at the commencement of any iaige works. Further delay w*as also caused through the necessity of making alterations in the construction and procedure of the scheme. The wisdom of these alterations had since been amply demonstrated. These alterations have resulted in the board having on hand a considerable amount of material which will be available for any future development* o. toi the constiuction of the breastwork behind the wharf The work was undertaken with the aid of an Unemployment Board subsidy on wages, conditionally on the men employed being registered unemployed. This has restricted the choosing of men specially suited for their respective jobs and has been a big factor in delaying the progress of the work. Tidal work and overtime have also played a big pa * t and much valuable time has been :o-t »t suitable tides, through being unjable to employ the men on shifts. The continued erosion at Jackett's Island end of the sea wall has caused some anxiety and resulted in the advisability of extend ing this wall into more stable ground 'This the board has agreed to do, and Die i work will be put in hand immediately. , \N hen this is completed the board wifi have a wall of solid construction from the *ho>e outwards and it will obviate the ; danger of having a wail hanging m the ' j "To surn up the position of work com- | pleted to dale is as follow*:—93 concrete i piles, 20 feet filling between piles to 100.00 | level, 30 feet filling between piles to 97.00 • level, 3o feet filling between piles to 95.00 ' level, 634 feet filling between pile.* to 93-00 >, level, 234 feet cupping completed. All | piles have been driven out to the point agreed upon (with the Marine Department. jt» terminate the present wall and it no v {remains to fill in between the piles. "It vvas found impossible, owing to the very strong current developed after the { chiving of piles, creating danger to the men employed and the risk of the pi.e driving gear being carried away, to com ; j plete Die filling in between piles as the L [vvork progressed and it vvas decided to > complete the driving of piles first. This 1 work is now completed and the filling • in will be commenced immediately in con i junction with the extension of the wall 5 into Jackett's Island. It is proposed to I fill in the first 4 feet above sea Led and • j then start for shore and fill up to the 97.00 L level outwards. Provision has been made for raising the level of the wall to 100.00 I I level (ii.vv.0.5.1.) should this be found 1 ! necessary later, to produce the necessary l scour As lo the ultimate success of ■ the scheme I have no doubt, but the position will have to be examined, and I the result watched, when the wall is comf pleted to it* present length, and any nc I suiv future work then decided upon. The I total expenditure is as follow s: —Wage*. 1 £1399 14s 6d ; material etc.. £3466 15* 3d . plant. £249 18s 3d: subsidy received. £llO2 13* 9d. "The work completed to date has been carried out in a thorough manner. The pile driving under the difficult condition* ha* been necessarily slow work, temporary piles having to be driven and Staging erected to carry the driving gear. More jiapid progress may now be expected."
