COMPOSITE FLYING-BOATS
j PICK-A-BACK IDEA i Unite 1 Press Association—By Jlectrio Telegraph—Copyright] LONDON, 20th January. Britain's new pick-a-back flying-boat, consisting of a smaller plane, named Mercury, perched on top of the mothercraft, Maia, had its successful first trial flight, encircling Rochester at a height of a thousand feet for an hour. The next test will be the crucial one. The Mercury will be launched from the top of the mother-craft at a height of 5000 feet, and the planes will then fly separately. The pick-a-back scheme will possibly revolutionise long-distance flying, the idea being to release the smaller plane in mid-air for long journeys with heavy loads after the larger plane has given it a start from 5000 feet.
