INCREASING USE OF TRAILERS

REFERENCE AT SOUTH ISLANDS TRAVEL ASSOCIATION QUESTION OF CAMPING GROUNDS The executive meeting of the South Islands Travel Association was concluded at the City Council Chamber yesterday afternoon, presided over by the Rev. E. T. Cox, Mayor of Dunedin. Mr J. S. Hawkes referred to visiting overseas drivers having to take out another license and suggested that the Government might be approached to relax the law in this respect. He also mentioned the varying scale of wharfage charges for cars which were irritating to visitors. He pointed out that camping was becoming a big item. At Christchurch between Christmas and the New Year they took over £IOO at the showground. The use of trailers would de velop in New Zealand, he added. They were largely used in U.S.A. where there were special parking grounds with water meters and electric meters. He thought it was time the Government was approached and asked to provide camping grounds at the chief tourist resorts.

The director, Mr J. J. W. Pollard, said that there were 500,000 trailers in U.S.A.. and 3000 camps for trailers, as distinct from motor camps, and over JOOO in Canada. Twenty thousand caravans visited Florida last winter. The question of camping areas would be an important one in the next few years.

Mr G. H. Andrews thought that con ditions should be reciprocal with re gard to licenses.

The matters raised were referred to the Emergency Committee for consideration.

Mr Andrews asked the Emergency Committee to take steps to find some good photographs of the South Island, even to the extent of offering prizes.

Mr J. Beanland proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor of Nelson and the City Council for offering the use of the Council Chamber, and for their hospitality. He also proposed a vote of thanks to the press.

The motions were carried by accla mation.

Mr Andrews congratulated Nelson on the splendid publicity booklets issued, and remarked on the beautiful drive from Picton.
