A thrilling rescue well out in the harbour this morning was witnessed by a large crowd of passengers on the ferry steamer Muritai. The hero was an Eastbourne resident. Max Hill, who showed great courage and alertness of mind in leaping from the ferry to save a woman passenger. The steamer left Rona Bay at 8.5. and ten minutes later, when nearing Ward Island, the master received an alarm that a passenger was overboard. He immediately stopped the engines and those aboard could see a person in the water about 400 yards away and another person swimming to the rescue. The ferry put about and a boat was manned and lowered. By this time Hill had reached the woman, who it appeared floated on her back for some time, and he was supporting her when the boat reached them. After they got into the boat the Muritai towed it back to Eastbourne The woman, also a resident of Eastbourne, was travelling with her husband and small son. She appeared fairly exhausted.
