FRUIT PACKERS

HOURS OF WORK FORTY HOURS MAY BE EXCEEDED [By Telegraph—Press Association] HASTINGS, 12th January. An Order-in-Council fixing the hours of work for fruit packers in factories was passed at a meeting of the Executive Council at Wellington to-day. according to advice received by Mr E. L. Cullen, M.P. for Hawkes Bay. Mr Cullen says the effect of the order is that employees concerned in the industry would be permitted to work more than 40 hours weekly. Sunday work, however, would have to be paid for at the rate of time and a half. Mr Cullen said that in response to many representations made to him he telegraphed the Minister of Labour, Hon. H. T. Armstrong, on Monday emphasising the uncertainty existing in the industry regarding the operation of the 40-hour week, and asking for an early decision in order to facilitate making arrangements for packing the fruit crop.
