TRANSPORT IN NELSON DISTRICT
HARBOUR IMPROVEMENT SCHEME PROPOSED COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY In reference to the Nelson Harbour Board's recent letter to the Minister of Transport regarding the appointment of a commission to enquire into the general condition of transport in the Nelson district the Commissioner of Transport wrote to yesterday’s monthly meeting of the board stating that the Minister of Marine had reported that the board was at the present time investigating the economics of incurring somewhat heavy expenditure to carry out improvements to the port. “In view of this the Minister would be pleased to learn whether your board intended that these investigations should be completed by it, or included in the order of reference for the proposed enquiry covering all forms of transport,” continued the letter. Mr W. C. Harley suggested that the Harbour Board’s proposed expenditure should be included in the order of reference of the Commission. That would definitely link the board with the investigation. The board wished to know if all the goods could be brought to Nelson so that it could be judged if the improvements were necessary.
It was deoided to reply that the board intended to complete its own investigations into the proposed harbour improvements, but particularly wished the Commission’s attention directed to the methods and control of the transport feeding the port. Mr C. T. Price: “What about Motueka?” The Chairman: “It is included, but it is not mentioned.” Mr H. W. Kelly: “But they know it.”
