Nineteen athletes are to be provided for in the Empire Games team to ire submitted by the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to the Olympic and Empire Games Council to-morrow. Ten men and five women were definitely selected last night, and three men fopditionally. A 410yds hurdler will be chosen after further trials. Those chosen, with their events, are: C. I-I. Matthews (Canterbury) mile and three miles; V. P. Boot (Canterbury) 880yds and mile; S. A. Lay (West Coast, Taranaki) javelin throw; 11. J. Tyrie (Otago) 440yd,s; G. Quinn (Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay) 100 and 220 yards; J. Leckie (Auckland) hammer throw; J. D. Morgan (West Coast, Taranaki), discus throw; F. Sharplcy (Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay) 120yds hurdles; A. R. Geddcs (Otago) six miles; A. .1. Sayers (Auckland) 440yds; Miss B. Forbes <Ofago) women’s high jump: Miss M. Mitchell (Auckland) women’s javelin throw; Miss D. Lumley (Auckland) women's javelin throw; Miss D. Lumley (Auckland) women’s 100yds and 220yds; Miss Strachan (Canterbury) women's broad jump; Miss R. Tong (Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay) 90yds women's hurdles.

The fololwing have also been selected conditionally on satisfactory trial performances; W. C. A. Pullar (Otago) mile: T. Allen (Otago) mile: C. Weller (West Coast, Taranaki) six miles.

The three athletes to undergo further trials for the selection of the 440yds hurdles are A. T. Anderson (Otago), H. D. Ball (Auckland) and F. A. Finlayson (Auckland).

The mile relay team will be chosen from selected men, but New Zealand will not enter in the 440yc!s relay.

Newell, the Canterbury and Dominion title-holder, definitely established himself as a strong claimant for inclusion in the New Zealand swimming team for the Empire Games. In an attempt on the record of smin 13 2-ssec set by G. Bridson, of Auckland, nearly six years ago, Newell swam the distance in smin 11 2-sscc.
