JUDGING DAY AT RICHMOND PARK OPENING OF 45th ANNUAL FIXTURE UNCERTAIN WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR STAGING OF EXHIBITS IMPROVED QUALITY AND NUMBERS IN MANY SECTIONS OF SHOW INTERESTING PROGRAMME FOR “PEOPLE'S DAY” TO-MORROW The 45th annual Show of the Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral Association opened at Richmond Park to-day. It was with mixed feelings that a wet judging day was faced—pleasure that the countryside was benefiting from rain after such a long spell of dry weather, and regrets that one of the most important fixtures of the year might be marred by unfavourable weather conditions. However, the rain held off during the early part of the morning and the programme was carried out without undue inconvenience. The principal activity for the day was the judging of the various classes. There is a small increase in the total number of entries and it is pleasing to see that the figures for horses, both light and draught, cattle and sheep are well maintained and that the competition in many classes is not confined to the immediate Nelson district. Exhibitors are present from Marlborough, Motueka, Riwaka, T apawera and Golden Bay, showing the wide appeal of the annual Nelson Show. Those best qualified to judge have commented to-day on the improved quality of stock in the province and pay tribute to the exhibitors for the appearance of their animals in a season which has not been the most favourable, owing to the dry conditions, for presenting them in perfect show form. To-morrow will be "People’s Day,” when town and country meet on common ground. On such a day the country people set the conditions; the farmer is the man with the greater knowledge of the fine points in stock and machinery. But the city dweller is not slow to recognise the importance of the occasion and appreciate the opportunity of inspecting in close compass the best stock and products of the man on the land.
