THE WEATHER

SQUALLY AND CHANGEABLE Squally and changeable weather was forecast to-day, with south-westerly winds, strong to gale force. A beneficial heavy downpour last night brought relief to a dry countryside. The sky became gloomy in Nelson yesterday afternoon, after 4 hours 45 minutes of bright sunshine, and the threatened rain came in heavy showers during the night, totalling 99 points in Nelson and 73 points at the Research Orchard. The total for the month to date in Nelson is 1.561n5. The barometer was down to 29.21 to-day; and during the morning the wind swung round to the south-west but the sky was still overcast. Overcast skies and rain were general in New Zealand this morning, only two places reporting blue sky. Heavy rain was experienced widely during the night, especially on the West Coast. Pressure was lower to-day.
