MAORI WOMEN BEFORE COURT
DESCRIBED AS “VERITABLE OUTLAW” [By Telegraph —Press Association 1 W HANGAR El, This Day. Described by u sergeant of the police as a veritable outlaw who kept . the authorities at bay, a married Maori woman, Anna Mareu Ileko, appeared in the Police Court at Kaitaia yesterday, before Messrs T. S. Houston and F. P. Rowe, Justices of tl-.e Peace, charged with pulling and destroying survey pegs.
Accused was arrested on Saturday after leading two constables on a long chase ia the back country of Ilokianga liarbou r. Sergeant Classen said that a surveyor had been obliged to flee when Lleke had chased him with a slasher. 'J he survey was completed under police protection. lleke then pulled the pegs, burning them. lleke was convicted, sentence being deferred for a year. On a charge of unlawfully obstructing fin free passage of people on a public road by the erection ol a wire fence, lleke was convicted and discharged.
