The Italian Government had staleil that there was no cause for apprehension. The British Government would carry mil its obligations to defend Egyptian territory in the event of Egypt becoming the victim ol aggression. Asked in the House of Commons whether he knew of the apprehension earned in Egypt by the concentration of large Kalian forces on the Libyan frontier and whether he proposed to make | representations to the Italian Govern- | merit under the joint declaration last i January, Viscount Cranborne, 'he t Foreign Under-Secretary, replied in the ! negative, adding: “I see no reason to I suppose that, the reinforcement of I troops in Libya is directed against j Egypt..” I Viscount Cranborne was also asked j whether in the view of the Government (that the provisions ot the Anglo-Egyp- | tian ’Treaty required to defend Egyptian territory in the event of Egypt becoming the victim of an act of unprovoked aggression, and he replied: “Yes.” A Labour member: "Docs he mean by •yes’ that the Government intend to carry out their obligations to the ’G.' ” Viscount Cranborne: "Yes.”
