Seeking refuge in the roadless bush country in the Upper Hokianga Harbour, a married Maori woman led two constables a wild chase on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Maraea Heke, facing a charge of pulling and destroying survey pegs, failed to appear in the court on Friday and a Bench warrant was issued. Constables Taylor and Molloy, of Kaitaia. set out immediately, but found the accused’s home deserted. Then followed a long search, and it was not until next morning that the constables located the accused at her home The woman will serve a two months’ sentence imposed in her absence on Friday on a charge of committing mischief.
