SAFE PASSING ON ROADS
('AUK NECESSARY L j 11 ,j STRICT OBSERVANCE OF RULES “Overtaking and passing without an adequate margin of safety is still 1 noticed on many thoroughfares, and the danger of such behaviour cannot be too strongly emphasised,’’ says the latest safety message of the Automobile Association, Canterbury. “Many drivers apparently are still not aware that it is an offence against flic traffic regulations to overtake and j pass another vehicle on a curve or near ; the crest of a hill where an adequate | view of traffic coming in the opposite j direction cannot be obtained, i “It is quite obvious that offences of this nature, especially where roads are ! busy, create dangerous situations, and the freedom of offenders from accidents i is not infrequently due to the prompt action on the part of other drivers, “The regulations prr ride that no driver of any motor-vehicle shall overi take or attempt to pass any vehicle I proceeding in the same direction:— ! “(a) At an intersection or within a I distance of thirty feet before an in- • tersection, if the other vehicle is travelling at a speed greater than six miles an hour. “lb) Unless the driver has a clear view of the road and the traffic there- | on for a distance of at least three j hundred feet in the direction in which j lie is travelling. ; “Many drivers, clearly, are not aware ! of ihe provisions of the regulations, or, 1 if they are, they are prepared to take | wholly unwarranted risks. There is no ! excuse for endangering ’’’’e and property because of a display of impatience or bravado. Courtesy and safely must be the essence of motoring practice. Many do not seem to realise that.”
