ANNUAL SPORTS DAY

AT NELSON COLLEGE ".IMLLIANT WEATHER FAVOURS FUNCTION YOUTHFUL ATHLETES The annual Sports Day at Nelson College was favoured by ideal wcathei ■conditions on Saturday, and there was a good attendance to witness the very complete afternoon’s athletic programme, which as usual was excellently carried out. The contests were of the keenest and big fields were sent away by the starter, the mile handicap having 78 competitors this year. In this event N. A. Woods, with a liberal start, kepi up a steady pace and opened up a gap on the field and finished full of runninfi to get in ahead of G. Lewis, who left his splendid finishing run just a little late. NEW SHOT PUT RECORD The shot put record seems to be made to be broken at the College; while in all other even)" it seems to become increasingly difficult to lower the best times put up in past years. Last year A. C. Wood set a new mark of 32ft 3ijin; and this year 11. L. McLaren bettered that mark by 2ft lin. This was the only record established for this year, but though the times were not brilliant, the racing was interesting and close finishes were seen in many of the events. fOUK TIE FOIt THE IVIARJORIBANKS A feature of the afternoon was the fact that four competitors gained equal marks in the two Marjoribanks Shield events —the 100yds and 75yds. Thorp got home by inches from Atkinson and Gomez in the 75yds; while W’anden secured the major placings in the 100yds ahead of Gomez and Atkinson. Each competitor then secured a total of five points. SENIOR AND JUNIOR CUPS The Senior Cup resulted in a tie between H. L. McLaren and G. C. Wood, who each secured a total of 22 points. R. J. Webb was in third place. The Junior Cup this year went to A. A. Marfell, who competed with consistent success in the various events, securing three first placings in the high jump, 440yds and half-mile, second in the 100yds and 120yds hurdles, and third in the long jump. S. Widle was his nearest opponent, with 15 points; and Ford was third with 10 points. At the close of the sports, the prizes were presented by Mrs H. Almore who accepted a bouquet from the youngest boy. Mrs Atmorc was introduced by Oe Principal, Mr 11. V. Searle. who thanked the donors of trophies. During the afternoon the Nelson Garrison Band under the conductorsihp of Mr. T. H. Hughes, rendered a selected programme. Visitors also to'k the opportunity of inspecting the woodword, engineering and art exhibition in the new Technical block; and in visiting the Scriptorium and Museum.
