MARKETING OF DAIRY PRODUCE
CO-0 rE R A TIO N BET \V EIC N DOMINIONS j AUSTRALIAN SUGGESTION l liv Artdooiation 1 ‘ AUCKLAND, 18th October. 1 A strong desire lor co-operation be- i tween the Dominions in Empire trade is being shown by dairy farmers in New I South Wales and most of their fellow j producers in the other Slates of Aus- \ tralia, according to Mr Lyonel G. Ashton, editor of the “Primary Producer,” Sydney, who arrived at Auckland by the Monterey from Sydney to complete arrangements for a goodwill tour of the North Island by 32 members of the Primary Producers’ Union of New South Wales. The party will reach Wellington by the Wanganella next week. “New South Wales dairy-farmers,” said Mr Ashton, “believe the time has come for the development of closer cooperation, and, as far as possible, coordination of method in the overseas marketing of New Zealand and Australian dairy products. In the past the two countries have been competitors in the British dairy produce market, but many producers in Australia now feel that methods of co-operation should be substituted for those of competition. They believe this is now possible, and that such a development would result in material benefits for producers of each Dominion.
Not only were New Zealand and Australian butters now practically on a parity of price in United Kingdom markets, said Mr Ashton, but they were also similar grade for grade in type and quality. In these circumstances it was considered by Australian producers that a continuance of competitive methods would be definitely harmful to the interests of the dairy-farmers of both New Zealand and Australia.
