FRENCH COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Many disorders occurred on the second day of the Departmental Council elections, especially in Marseilles, where bailiffs appointed by the President of the Civil Tribunal were expelled from the booths by the presiding officers. Orders were given that only groups of five electors would be admitted at one time. In the absence of the bailiffs the booths became scenes of uproar. The police intervened and as a consequence one candidate lodged a protest. At one booth a voter shot another in the head, the victim being taken to hospital and the attacker arrested. Unable to agree with the other officials, the presiding officer at another booth, picked up the ballot-box and walked out with it under his arm.

LUXURIOUS ARRANGEMENTS GENERAL ELECTIONS IN RUSSIA MOSCOW, 18th October. Luxurious arrangements have been made for the comfort of electors voting at the general elections on 12th December. The waiting-rooms in Moscow contain decorative tables, artistic fittings, lampshades, delicate silks, divans, chessboards and palms. The polling booths are fitted with chairs and tables, curtains in rich shades being arranged along the carpeted corridors. VICTORY FOR POPULAR FRONT (Received 19th October, 10.55 a.m.) PARIS, 18th October. The cantonal elections ended in a victory for the Popular Front, whose various brandies won BG4 seats, gaining 45. The Opposition secured G6l.
