ASSISTING REFUGEES
FUNDS TO BE RAISED I By Telegraph - Press Association! WELLINGTON, 18th October. A public meeting of citizens and members of interested organisations called by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. I-Jislop) to-day discussed ways and means of raising money to assist refugees suffering through the present conflict in China. The meeting decided to go ahead y l.h the raising of funds, and to work in with the Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John, which have already launched an appeal. it was resolved to leave the distribtuion of the money to the Red Cross Society A special Chinese Appeal Committee was cat up by the council of the Order of St. .John and the Red Cross Society, with Sir .James Elliott as chairman. The committee aims to raise £IO.OOO in a month with (he co-operation of other organisations. Mrs T. H. Lowry has made a gift of a number of special stamps to be sold to motorists in order to defray the initial expenses Mrs Lowry has given £2O, and Sir James Elliott £lO to the fund.
