The following cablegram was revived by the Chinese Consul from ; 'Tanking on Saturday night:— “Three more Japanese attempts 1o land reinforcements north-west of Lolien further up the Yangtze River were frustrated. Despite a fierce Japanese attack under cover of a smoke screen, the Chinese troops are still holding the line south-west of Lotien which papers from Japanese prisoners reveal that the Japanese troops were ordered to break through before 12th October. “There was fierce fighting at Wentsaopang. After repeated Chinese coun-ter-attacks and a flanking movement, the enemy was driven back to the edge of the south bank of (he creek. “The Chinese batteries at Pootung last night wrought havoc among the Japanese troops and their supplies at Yangtzepoo. “This morning Japanese planes bombed Hangchow railway station. There
were heavy civilian casualties. It is noteworthy that the British have important interests in the Shanghai-llang-chow railway.”
