TOBACCO INDUSTRY
NEW ZEALAND FEDERATION MEETING OF EXECUTIVE At a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Tobacco Growers Federation held at Motueka last Friday evening, the following were present: Messrs F. A. Hamilton (in the chair), K. J. Holyoake M.P., R. Stephens, V. Davy, M. Thorn, C. Jordan, W. G. Kerr, G. M. Eden, and N. J. Lewis (secretary). The draft rules for submission to a general meeting were perused and approved, and a general meeting to finalise the Federation called for Friday next at 2 p.m., at Bowers Sample Rooms, Motueka. It was resolved that in the meantime the office of treasurer be combined with that of the secretary. EXPORT TOBACCO The question of the agreement on.export tobacco was considered and the president and secretary authorised to execute it on behalf of the Federation. The meeting considered it would be desirable to meet grower members of the Tobacco Board prior to the general meeting, and the secretary was instructed to ask them to attend a meeting at 1 p.m. ~ , Various matters dealing with finance were discussed, and it was decided that the Federation try to obtain all official information relevant to the cost of production and other aspects of the industry, for the information of growers, and of interest to them. In this connection it was pointed out that when growers supplied information it would be of great value to the to have copies of the particulars in its possession. INSURANCE AGAINST DAMAGE There was a lengthy discussion on the scheme for insurance against damage to crops. From information available it appears that this move will be of the greatest value to the industry and immediate action is to be taken to establish a fund. A committee consisting . of Messrs Hamilton, Thorn, and Holyoake, was set up to take action and report. Mr N. J. Lewis was appointed secretary to the Federation. CONFERENCE WITH WORKERS’ UNION Prior to the meeting, there was a conference which lasted for some hours with representatives of the New Zealand Workers Union. The whole question of hours, wages and conditions r* of work was fully discussed, and tenta-' tive agreements made on all points. The whole question will be discussed at the general meeting.
