RIVERSIDE TENNIS CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING I From Onr Own Correspondent) The courts of the Riverside Tennis Club, which were in excellent order for the commencement of play, were officially opened for the season on Saturday, in the presence of a large number of members and representatives from the Central, Kia Ora and Motueka clubs. Mr J. Goodyer, president, extended a welcome to new membei, and to visitors from other clubs and expressed the hope that all would enjoy the afternoon. He then called upon the patron, Mr D. L. Drummond to speak. Mr Drummond said the club was fortunate in having weather ideal for tennis on the opening day, and added that last season the elements generally had been against all classes of outdoor sport. He was glad, he said, to see that so many young people and also quite a number of older players were availing themselves of the facilities offered by the club. In referring to the financial aspect, Mr Drummond averred that the courts had been laid down at an expenditure of £235. Fie congratulated those who had been responsible for the control lof the finances of the club and had through hard and diligent work practically wiped out the debit. The amount owing at the end of last year was approximately £2O; and considering the lean period experienced during the several years of depression, he j thought the administration of the club had been marvellous. An additional

expenditure, however, had been incurred in the top dressing of the courts for the present season. Mr Drummond expressed the hope that the Riverside Club would have a successful season on its own courts and in matches with other clubs. He called on Miss N. Inglis to serve the first ball; and the courts were declared open for the season. A delicious afternoon tea, provided and dispensed by the ladies was much appreciated, after which friendly games arranged for members and visitors were thoroughly enjoyed by all participating. CLUB DANCE In the Oddfellows’ Flail, Riwaka, on Saturday evening the club held a dance, which was well attended and constituted a fitting finale to the opening day ceremony. The Gaiety Dance Band supplied excellent music for modern and old[time dances, and Mr B. Hickmott carried out the duties of M.C., extras i being played by Mr H. Williams junior. Supper arrangements were undertaken by lady members of the club, and the appetising supper provided was much enjoyed by the dancers. The box of chocolates for competition was won by Miss Fay Bridger.
