CAR OVERTURNS

Serious head injuries were suffered by James McCarthy, of Yaldhurst, when the small car in which he was overturned on the Main West Road, near Yaldhurst, at 11 o'clock this morning. Three other men in the car escaped with severe shakings and minor abrasions.

The car. which was being driven oy George Arthur Kirner, Christchurch, was going west along the road when apparently a tire burst and the car capsized into loose shingle at the side of the bitumen surface and then rolled right over the bank. McCarthy was in

the back seat and was unconscious. Kirner, after helping to get him out, left for a farmhouse to obtain help. When he returned he found that McCarthy and his companions had disappeared. It was discovered later that a passing motorist had picked them up and taken them to the Christchurch public hospital. The other occupants of the car were Clive Hughes, of Moorhouse Avenue, Christchurch, and James Cossar. They were treated in the outpatients’ hospijtal. The car was badly damaged. McCarthy's condition was reported at 11 p.m. to-night to be serious.
