WATERFRONT STRIKE
TROUBLE AT AUCKLAND NON-UNION LABOUR [Bv Telegraph-Press Asßooiationl AUCKLAND. 10th September. Labour trouble has developed on the waterfront. It started through a dispute between the ‘seagulls’ or non-union woikers and the regular union members in connection with unloading the Narbada, which arrived from Calcium this morning. No union labour was available for unloading the vessel and 200 “seagulls” were called. Later work on the Hertford was completed, and 50 union member!) came to the Narbada. According to an understanding 50 “seagulls” should have retired and allowed the 50 unionists to continue the work instead. However, 200 “seagulls” walked off and the unloading was held up. The “seagulls” placed pickets to prevent non-union labour operating. The latest news is that work is paralysed on the Akaroa and almost at a standstill on the Waiwera. There is likelihood of the trouble spreading.
