WOMEN AND CHILDREN SUFFER MOST
While numerous Chinese and Japanese have been killed or wounded in the fighting, the real hardships of the battle in China aie being borne by Chinese women and children who have been driven from the "Good Earth" and forced to seek shelter in the international settlements. Thousands of refugees similar to those shown in the lower left have (led to lortilicd areas. Typical of the modern Chinese fighting man is the well-equipped soldier shown in the upper left. He is a member of the new army brought up-to-date by Chiang Kai-shek. With hundreds killed and wounded, the scenes like that shown in the upper right are now becoming familiar. One of the modern field guns of the Chinese 29th route army is shown in action in the lower right.
