ROSES AS RENT
After lapsing since early in the 15th century, a payment of roses as rent for a City window, in Seething Lane, London, was revived last year by the Rev P B. Clayton, in connection with Toe H. Ihe chairman ol the East London Area Toe H, presented two red roses on a cushion to the Lord Mayor, and each member of the deputation also presented a rose. A military commander named Knolles built a projecting window to his house He was ordered to remove it. but was allowed to retain it on condition that he paid two roses as rent every year on the Feast of St. John the Baptist. 24th June. The favour was granted the ofiicor in recognition of his assistance at the slaying of the rebel Wat Tyler at Smiihfield The window ceased to exist centuries ago
