MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL BUSINESS CONCLUDED YESTERDAY The Waimea County Council concluded its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. The District Engineer. Public Works Department, Nelson, notified that the Government had agreed to a grant of £IOO (£2 for £1) in connection with the flooding of the Waimea West road. Councillor L. M. Palmer said the river still flooded the upper part of Waimea West and the residents there were anxious to have further work done. The settlers were willing to subsidise the work. On Councillor Palmer's motion it was decided that providing the ratepayers subsidise the Council £1 for £1 and the Public Works Department provide a subsidy of £1 for £l. the protection work be proceeded with forthwith. The Labour Department wrote in connection with the subsidised scheme for the eradication and control of noxious weeds. The Pelorus Scenic Board wrote suggesting that the Council be represented on the board. It was decided that the chairman represent the Council. The Nelson City Council wrote asking for the appointment of a person to vote on behalf of the County at Municipal elections and polls. The County Chairman was nominated. The Nelson Plunket Society applied for a contribution to its funds and for the use of the room in which to hold meetings. It was decided that a grant of £lO be made and that the society be granted the use of the rooms. The Nelson Provincial Progress League asked the Council to allow its recent increase in contribution to be used in securing space for Nelson in a publication to be produced by the South Island Travel Association. This request was acceded to. The N.Z. Counties’ Association wrote regarding the formation of a County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employers. The letter was received. Mr F. A. C. Staig, surveyor, Motueka, forwarded for the Council’s approval, plan of land taken for a road in section 144, Block 4, Motueka S.D. (Trewavas—Motueka Wharf). The Engineer is to report on the matter. Mr F. I. Ledger, surveyor, Nelson, forwarded for the Council’s approval. ?. plan of the proposed township of Wakapuaka extension No. 3 (Mr C. H. Ruffell’s). The plan was approved. Mr J. J. Cook, Riwaka, was granted permisison to erect a private telephone line across the road at Sandy Bay road. Mrs E. M. Creasy was granted permission to erect a private telephone line along the old Motueka coach road. Mr M. J. Curinsky, Wakapuaka, applied for permission to encroach cn the public road with his Doundary fence fronting parts of sections .’1 and i2, block 4, Wakapuaka. Walsleben, Stoke, thanked the council for the extension of culvert on Station road near the enl-arme to his property rJUULTS VALLEi’ t wKIJ Mr Charles Cook and twelve others, of Wai-iti, made application for the erection of a light araffic bridge at Houit’s Valley The Engineer, in answer to Councillor Baigent. said the cost of such a bridee would be in the vicinity of £2500. , Councillor Baigent pointed out the difficulty which faced the settlers in the present ford and expressed the hope that the council could do something to help and that the Government could be asked for a grant. It was decided to reply pointing out the cost of a bridge and asking the settlers what contributions they would make. Mr R. N. Arnold Korere asked for theroad leading to his property at Tadmor to be repaired The matter was left to the Engineer to deal with.

Johnston, Nelson, applied for nermission to erect a three-roomed whore on the roadside between the formed road and the Motuek' river, at Woodstock. The riding member and engineer are to inspect and have power to act Mr H. Thomas. Pokororo. asked permission to clean up and occupy a rough piece of river bed opposite his property. The riding members and engineer are to interview the property owners, with power to act. The Commissioner of Crown Lands. Nelson, wrote asking the council to improve the road leading to the north branch source of the Riwaka river and scenic reserve It was decided to reply that the council had no money to carry out the work suggested, but that application was being made to the Tourist Department for a grant for that purpose. The Women’s Division of the N.Z.F.U.. Riwaka branch, was granted permission to erect a shelter shed at Newport s corner, Riwaka. under the supervision of the Engineer. The riding member and Engineer are to report on a request by Mr Eric L. Gill. Mapua, for attention to a hollow in front of his property. The Sandy Bay Settlers’ Association wrote asking for the formation of a road beyond Mr R. A. Franklin's property. Tt was decided to reply that the council had the matter in hand, and was waiting for further information from the P.W.D. Mr C. E. Jordan is to be supplied with pipes to replace an old bridge in Brandy Valley.
