H j s officially announced that passenger fares on England, Australia and America lines will be ineieased by ,m average of 10 per cent, on Ist Oetobci. The shipping spokesman for the Aus-tralian-New Zealand passenger conference explained in an interview with the Australian Associated Press that the increases apply to all lines trading between England and Australia, and England and New Zealand; also North America, Australia and New Zealand. The rates will vary according to the port and class of vessel, but will approximately be 10 per cent. They will not apply to passages booked prior to Ist October. The spokesman added that the companies were reluctant to increase fares but it was unavoidable owing to increased operating costs and higher price of now tonnage. Moreover, economies in propulsion would be given back to the public in the form of larger accommodation, thus reducing the payable space. The companies drew attention to the fact that the rates would still be below those of 1932.
