Councillor G. P. Russell, who returned this week from a holiday visit to Queensland with the Nelson bowlers, was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr G. L Page) at last night’s meeting of the City Council. The Mayor said it was pleasing to see Councillor Russell looking so well, and commented on the successful tour of the bowlers. Both Councillor S. A. Gibbs and Councillor Russell had been missed from the Council discussions and all councillors would welcome Councillor Russell back Councillor Russell thanked the Mayor for his references to the bowlers. He said that if Nelson was not well advertised in Queensland it was not the fault of the bowlers»or their manager, Mr W. A. Dee. At a meeting of the committee of the Nelson Institute the president (Mr J. Fitz-Gerald) referred to the death of the late Mr A. L T. Jones who had been a valued member of the committee for some years. The sympathy of the committee was extended to the relatives, members standing as a mark of respect. At the annual meeting of the Parliamentary Press Gallery yesterday, Mr J. A. Young ("Dominion”) was elected chairman, and Mr E. C Marris "Evening Post”) vice-chairman. Mr Henry William Lever, formerly chief inspector for New Zealand of the Bank of New South Wales, died in Wellington un Wednesday, aged 79 years. The late Mr Lever was born in Brisbane in 1858. and joined the Bank of New South Wales there when he was 19 years of age. After his marriage to Miss Eva Currie, of Armidale, he was transferred to New Zealand in 1910 receiving the appointment of manager of the Napier branch. A year later he was appointed manager of the Wellington branch, and in 1921 he was appointed chief inspector for New Zealand This position he held until his retirement in 1927 For the last ten years he had been living in retirement in Wellington. Mr Trevor Lane, editor of the “New Zealand Radio Record,” leaves Wellington to-day on the Awatea for Sydney en route to London. Mr Lane was at school in Nelson. The late Mr John Albert Croudis, formerly of Nelson, who died at Blenheim recently, was pre-deceased by his wife, who was formerly Miss Anna Mary Tidd, eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs T. S. Tidd, of FoxhilL A motion ot sympathy to Councillor G. Manson was passed by the Waime.i County Council to-day, in the death ot his mother.
