FIRST CALL FROM STREET BOX
TWO FIRES AND ONE FALSE ALARM LOWS VALUABLE HELP TO BRIGADE The first call through the new street fire alarm system was put through by a “Mail” runner on Saturday afternoon at 4.45 o’clock. A fire broke out in an outbuilding attached to the residence of Miss A. M. Jennings, Weka street, and the boy, who had evidently read the instructions published, dashed off to the nearest alarm box, broke the glass with his elbow and gave the alarm. He then waited to direct the brigade to the fire which was some distance away. The fire was soon extinguished by means of a bucket pump, and only slight damage was done to the walls. The fire was caused by a tin of ashes which was placed in the sVd.
Yesterday afternoon at 2.50 o’clock the brigade received a false alarm from a street box.
To-day Superintendent A. J. Bennett commended the action of the boy who directed the Brigade to the Weka street fire. ' Much valuable time would have been lost had he not waited at the callbox.
This morning fire broke out in new shop premises at the corner of Russell street and Haven road, occupied by Mr A. Dobson. The fire is understood to have originated in the kitchen where a turpentine heater was being used. The brigade’s prompt arrival confined the outbreak to minor damage.
