The correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” at St. Jean De Luz states that 250,000 persons at Santander are on the verge of starvation, according to British refugees who arrived from Santander. The British United Press Association reports further advances by the rebels on the Bilbao front towards Santander. FORCED LANDING BASQUE OFFICIALS TAKEN v PRISONER LONDON, 23rd June. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Bayonne correspondent says that the Basque Minister of Health, Senor Alfredo Espinosa and several others, who were flying from Toulouse to Santander, were taken prisoner when a French commercial plane made a forced landing in insurgent territory. _ / REBEL GOVERNMENT RECOGNITION REFUSED BY AUSTRIA GESTURE OF_ FRIENDSHIP TO WESTERN POWERS (Received 24th June, 11.25 a.m.) VIENNA, 23rd June. The Government turned down a request from General Franco, backed by Germany, to recognise the rebel Government of Spain. It is officially announced that 43 volunteer Italian airmen have been killfed in the Spanish war. ENGLISHMAN AMONG ARRESTED LABOUR PARTY’S REPRESENTATIVE (Received 24th June, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, 23rd June. The Independent Labour Party states that an Englishman, Mr John McNair, the party’s Barcelona representative, is among those arrested. He will be charged with carrying letters and money for the Spanish Trotskyist party. Mr Brockway, secretary of the Independent Labour Party, says the arrest is presumably the sequel to the repatriation of some wounded and sick members, money for which was, taken from McNair and restored, after which the incident had been thought closed. STEAMER STOPPED BY REBELS 1700 REFUGEES ON BOARD CONVEYED TO PORT BY BRITISH CRUISER LONDON, 23rd June. The "Daily Telegraph’s” Bordeaux correspondent- says that the British cargo steamer Marianna Moller, with 1700 refugees ,on board from Santander. was stopped on the high seas by General Franco’s ship Ceudad De Palma. The British captain sent a wireless message to the battleship Resolution, which ordered the destroyer Boadicea to convoy the Marianna Moller to St. Jean De Luz, where both arrived at midnight, but the authorities refused to allow the refugees to land, as it is believed that'there are militiamen aboard.
