CONSISTENT SUPPORT BY BRITAIN REPLY TO LABOUR PARTY’S ATTACK (British Official Wireless] (Received 24th June, 12.50 p.m.) RUGBY, 23rd June. The Minister of Labour (Mr Ernest Brown) defended the Government’s record in connection with the League of Nations International Labour Organisation against the Labour Party’s attack in the House of Commons. Mr Brown said the British Government could not be accused of not being sympathetic with the work of the International Labour Office. They had given it consistent support The total number of conventions ratified by Britain was the highest, with the exception of Spain, of any European country. Mr Brown deprecated contusion of the question of general support of the International Labour Organisation and (he question of particular sunport of the forty-hour week proposal. He said he could not go to Geneva and pretend the British Government agreed to a policy which was badly founded and which was incomplete in itself, and contained proposals which no joint council in any industry in the United Kingdom would accept.
