BASIC WAGE
INCREASE IN AUSTRALIA AVERAGE OF 5s [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright! MELBOURNE, 24th June. Increases in the basic wage averaging 5s for all states covering workers under Federal awards were granted by the Commonwealth Court to-day. Thus the basic wage at Sydney rises to £3 18s, at Melbourne £3 15s, at Adelaide £3 12s, at Perth £3 14s, at Hobart £3 14s, and 'at Brisbane £3 14s.
The Court’s judgment, which was unanimous, affects nearly the whole of the metal trades- industry, most state transport worker's and manufacturing interests The radio of workers interested in New South Wales is about 6 in every 10. The remainder are under State awards. The increase is estimated to cost the New South Wales Government an extra £500,000 annually.
