COSTER BALL
BRIGHT SCENES AT VELMA HALL
McKenzie’s sponsor successful FUNCTION
Coloured floodlights, decorations of silver and golden moons, Japanese lanterns, multi-coloured gilt streamers, flags and huge pompoms formed a delightful setting for the most success? ful Coster Ball, sponsored by the staff of Messrs J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., held in the Velma Half last njght. The pear buttoned Coster costumes, large ostrich feather hats, and other novel costmes, created a gay scene on the floor. Partly concealed in a trellis-work bower of autumn leaves and paper flowers, Lex Logan’s orchestra provided a bright programme, which was relayed by Station 2ZR, .. An adjacent balcony was tastefully decorated with fern fronds, and. native greenery, while from several arches supporting giant paper lanterns, curtains of yellow, green and orange streamers fell in a delicate shower of colour.
During the evening a Coster dance “Two Roses,” played by an 1886 barrel organ, was performed by Miss Edna Greenem and Miss Elizabeth Stedman. i A coronation ballet by the pupils of Miss Thelma Preece was enthusiastical- , ly received. The attractive costumes were composed of flag shirts and white shoulder coats lined with blue. Jaunty i pill-box hats with Coronation blue feathers, completed the effect. Items | by Begg’s Piano Accordeon Orchestra were equally well received. Mr T. Neale, President of the Nelson Crippled Children Society thanked Mr E. F. Ward and McKenzie’s staff for the splendid evening, the proceeds of which would be of great assistance to the society. The best Cqster costume prize was awarded to Miss R. Clarke. Mr A.
