ENGLISH BUILDINGS
AUSTRALIAN VISITOR CRITICAI PLEA FOR HARMONY (By Air Mail —From a Special Correspondent) LONDON, 29th May. After twenty-six years in Australia Miss Daisy Martin has returned to London on a visit, and in a letter to a London newspaper she has commented unfavourably on the new English architecture. Miss Martin wrote: .1 left England in 1911 and have come over from Australia on a visit May I say, from the viewpoint of a stranger, how this beautiful country is being spoiled by the modern, soul-less blocks of cement going up all over England, in the shape of houses, flats, garagbs, cinemas, and even churches? These buildings are replacing what was once beautiful. If the ancient must be pulled down, is it not possible to erect beautiful buildings more in keeping with the English landscape?
