RICHMOND

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING The ordinary meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr H. Warren Kelly), Councillors Polglaze, Norris, Poole, McGlashen, Tuffnell and Palmer. Accounts totalling £lOl 5s were passed for payment. The foreman’s report was read and adopted as follows: “Grading has been done on the following streets: William street, George street, Upper Queen street, Hill street and Champion road and the dirt carted away. Also the Nelson-Westport State Highway has been graded. Three 6inch concrete pipes have been placed in the watertable in Cambridge street and six Oinch pipes in the ditch in William street Some patching has been done on the bitumen in Lower Queen street. Three yards of river gravel have been spread on Malcolm’s road and 17$ yards of beach metal on Hillcrest. The material from the bell tower has been placed in the engine shed. A stopcock has been repaired in Queen street. Weeds have been taken off the footpath and watertable in Oxford street. The Nelson Hospital Board forwarded a copy of the estimaes for 1937-38. Richmond's levy remains unchanged. The letter from the Crippled Children’s Society held over from meeting was further held over pending a conference of local bodies which is to be held in the near future The Nelson City Council offered the Council £4OO for the borough roadroller. The offer was accepted on the motion of Councillor Polglaze seconded by Councillor Tuffnell. An amendment by Councillor Palmer that the roller be offered for £425 lapsed for want of a seconder. The Mayor stated that an inspection of houses in the borough had to be carried out, and it was necessary to appoint an investigator for the work.

It was resolved that Mr A. Muntz be appointed to the position if the necessary arrangements can be made. If Mr Muntz’s services cannot be secured it was left to the Finance Committee to make an appointment. It was resolved that the fire bell be tested in the nea>- future at a date to be advertised.

The Mayor slated that Jubilee Park was now in excellent condition. The grass had been cut and was now showing the benefits of the topdressing. The question of further around improvement was fully discussed and it was resolved that the Council meet at the Park on Friday morning and investigate matters on the spot.
