MEN ON SUSTENANCE
• • FOUND IN GAMING-HOUSE MAGISTRATE’S SUGGESTION [United Press Association] AUCKLAND, 21st June. Of 55 men arrested in the gaminghouse raid on Friday night, 49 were charged in the Police Court to-day, six having been fined on Saturday. Harry Williams, a seaman and caretaker, pleaded guilty to using the premises as a common gaming-house. He was fined £3O. Others were charged with being found on premises. Two, who did not appear, were fined £5, as also were eighteen men who had previously been convicted. The remainder were fined £2 and costs. Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., commented on the number of men drawing sustenance who had been found In the gam-ing-houses. “This is a matter that should receive attention from the authorities,” he said. “If these men abuse a privilege by wasting money they draw in sustenance, I think sustenance money should be paid them in lion-negotiable coupons. It is Hot right to the rest of the community that they should waste money given them by the country.”

WANGANUI, 21st June.
Leon Pong, a Chinese, who drew sustenance payments of £1 19s for six weeks while working in a market garden whereas he was entitled to draw only 22s a week, having a wife and one child, was ordered to refund. 15s on each of six charges. Mr Salmon, S.M., remarked that in dealing with these' cases he always endeavoured to Impose such penalty as would reimburse the Department so that the person charged would receive no gain through false declaration.
