W.D.F.U.

HIWIPANGO BRANCH THIRD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED The third birthday of the Hiwipango branch of the W.D.F.U. was held as a house party at the residence of Mrs W. R. Hunt, Awanui.” The weather being fine, a splendid attendance resulted, including presidents and friends from many branches.

The president, Mrs Mead, welcomed her guests. The entertainment for the afternoon consisted of songs, Miss R. V. Ellis. “The Market” in character, and “Times’ Roses”; and Mrs Wendelborn “What is the Time, Blackbird?” and “Here’s to Love.” Miss Phyllis Mead played the accompaniments and also gave a piano solo.

A short piayette entitled “The Hostesses’ Husband” was played by the Misses -J. and N. Wells. A novel competition causing amusement was won by Mrs McNabb. The birthday cake, made and decorated by Miss Mead, was then brought in. Mrs Robinson (Stoke) was called upon to light the three candles, Mrs Hockey (Richmond) to blow them out, and Mrs Berryman (Motupiko) to cut the cake, followed by Mrs Lawrence (Wakefield Institute), Mrs Jordan (Dovedale), and Mrs Bird (Wakefield), each expressing congratulations and words of encouragement and good cheer.

Apologies came from Mapua and Wakapuaka.

A very pretty supper cloth made by Miss Mead was raffled, the prize going to Mrs Creighton. A case of apples kindly donated by Mrs Robinson (Stoke) was won by Mrs Rowley. This, with the sale of "mystery parcels,” considerably added to the branch funds. The points prize for the year, won by Miss Mead, was presented by Mrs Ellis. ' Small bouquets of flowers made by Mrs A. Wells were presented by Master Mark Wendleborn to the president, the secretary and the hostess. Afternoon tea was partaken of and a vote of thanks to Mrs Hunt brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close

FARMERS’ UNION

WAIMEA BRANCH MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Waimea branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the club room, Brightwater. Mr H. F. Palmer presided over a large attendance.

Six new members were elected. It was resolved that a letter be sent to the Minister of Agriculture asking for an effective grading of bacon pigs for export. It was decided that a letter be sent to the provincial president of the Poverty Bay Farmers’ Union for information as to treatment of fcotrot. It was resolved that for the purpose of canvassing for new members the boundary between the Richmond and Waimea branches be Hope Store road, hill to river.

Mr Holyoake, M.P., gave a lengthy address on the activities of the Farmers’ Union dealing with canvassing for new members and the success which has attended all districts since starting After discussion on various matters, Mr Dron moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Holyoake for his capable address. Mr L M. Palmer seconded the motion which was carried by acclamation. Supper was then partaken of. supplied by the Women’s Division of Mr Holyoake in moving a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies for supper, spoke of the good that the Women’s Division is doing, and wished them the best of good fortune for the future.
