ELECTRIC POWER IN COUNTRY

To I’he Editorl Sir.—The writer regrets that lie was not able to attend the meeting at Tapa wera on the 16th instant, apd appreciates the fact that there is “urgent need for electric power" in that district. As to the guarantee required “of about £l2 per consumer” it is earnestly suggested (hat all the ratepayers affected should carefully consider the following factors of importance before committing themselves to such liability, viz

(1) Is such guarantee based on the idea that every ratepayer and householder will lie a consumer for such scheme?

(2) If not, or m default, what will be llie amount required to he guaranteed by those who actually avail themselves of (lie electric light or power? (3) Is it proposed to levy ail availability rate throughout the district, as imposed ill the Marlborough Power Board area? (4) Will the Waimea Power Board undertake to supply electric light and power at the same price ns the Government's promised reduced rates in the near fut urc

(5) It behoves the ratepayers to bear in mind that it lias been stated on good authority that the government intends to electrify the East Coast Railway from Pic ton to Christchurch, in keeping with modern developments, with power from the Gowan. JiVill such cheaper power ho available from the Gowan before any hies through from the Cobb?—l am, dC ’’ H. G. BERRYMAN. Nelson, 21st June. '
