HARBOUR BOARD MONTHLY MEETING [From Our Own Correspondent] At the monthly meeting ol the Motueka Harbour Board there were present Messrs C. L. Ilarvev (ehairman), D. L. Ih'ummomi, P. B." t'ahier, C. H. Maekay, U. lLainiiig, Horatio Everett and A. Bowling- . . , Arising from the minutes it was deemed to defer further consideration ol matters associated with the lease of land to the Motucka Safe Bathing Society until the society had had its special meeting to finalise its decision to surrender the lease or otherwise.

HARBOUR CONSTRUCTION WORKS

The chairman reported that the sum of £5.257 Ids lid had been expended on harbour construction works to date. W ages totalled £956, and the Government subsidy on wages was £445 ss. Following a letter received from Mr C. Traill, consulting engineer, regarding an alteration in the procedure lor the construction of the wall on the southern side of the entrance, it was resolved on the motion of Messrs Everett - and Calder that the prosecution of work as recommended by Mr Sharp, Government Engineer, bo approved by the Board. In a supplementary statement, the harbourmaster, Mr P. G. Mofta-tt, reported that during the month a vessel had collided with the extreme end of the breastwork, smashing a pile and damaging the waling of the wharf. Arrangements had been made to effect the necessary repairs. FOREMAN'S REPORT Reporting on harbour construction works for the period ending 30th April, the foreman, Mr C. O’Brien, stated: — No. 2 job, 50 piles concreted, 47 pile cores specially wound, 20 pile boxes erected, and pile cores are in place for concreting, No. 3 job, 5 piles concreted, 5 pile cores spirally wound, re-inforcement for 72 slabs has been completed, 124 concrete piles are ready for driving, including 12 old piles cut in half. To complete piles for jobs Nos. 2 and 3, 30 piles yet to complete, 2 pile cores to spirally wind, 10 pile boxes to erect and pile cores to place in position for concreting. Number of men employed, 11. including one foreman. CORRESPONDENCE The Waimea County Council wrote regarding the closing of Ward Street, Port Motueka, stating that as apparently this street was not used for traffic and no hardships would be created, the Council had decided not to put any obstacles in the way of this street being closed. It was resolved that steps be taken to close Ward Street, and the legalisation of the present accommodation road to the wharf

W. D. mid H. 0. Wills (N.Z.) Ltd. wrote thanking the Board for informing them that a quarter acre section of land was available close to the wharf at an annual rental of £lO. It, was stated that before proceeding further with this matter they «ould be glad to have the Board's assurance that a further area of land would be available adjoining this site should the writers need it at a later date. The Board was also asked to furnish a sketch plan of the land now vacant. The letter was received, and the request complied with. The secretary of the Motueka Coronation Celebration Committee wrote asking foe a donation towards the funds of the committee. It was decided on the motion of Messrs Everett and Maekay, to donate the sum of £5, to the Coronation Committee.

The Under Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, wrote regarding arrangements in connection with the celebration of the Coronation of His Majesty the Kig, and asking the co-op-eration of the Board in respect of, 1. The observance of Wednesday, 12th May, as a paid holiday for employees, and 2. The decoration and illumination of the Board’s wharves and buildings during Coronation week. The writer added that all ship owners were being asked to have their ships “dressed overall’’ while in New Zealand waters during Coronation week.

The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, wrote forwarding a copy of his appeal to the people of New Zealand in connection with the King George V Memorial Fund for the permanent establishment of Children’s Health Camps in which the co-operation of the Board yvas sought. ft was decided on the motion of Messrs Everett and Rowling that the sum of £lO b> donated towards the National Memorial Fund, Ihe secretary of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand wrote asking for a monetary grant to enable the society to carry on its good work in the Dominion. On the motion of Messrs Rowling and Drummond a donation of £1 was approved. The secretary to the Treasury, Wellington, forwarded a copy of the Order in Council consenting to the hypothecation oj debentures issued in respect of the Harbour Channel Restoration Loan of £5,000.

OTHER MATTERS Ihe transfer of the lease of *a section at Port Motuoka from J. E. Boyce to E. E. Reeves was approved. Accounts in connection with the general and special funds amounting to £9OB 15s 4d were passed for payment, leaving a credit of £ll7 17 2d.

The chairman, according to notice, moved (1) That the motion recorded in the minutes of the Board meeting, dated 25th March 1937, dealing with the extension of twelve months for the calling of applications for the position of secretary, bo rescinded. (2) that the motion recorded in the minutes of 30th November 1936, dealing with the deferring of the three months of calling applications, be rescinded. (3) that applications for the position of secretary to the Board will not be called until after the 25th February 1938.

A sectional discussion was agreed upon, and after a sharp debate No. 1 was carried with one dissentient (Mr Rowling) and No. 2 approved on the voices, whilst No. 3 was withdrawn bv the consent of the meeting.
