PURCHASE OF MILLER’S SECTION

ITo The Editor) Sir, —l would ask those who have not yet decided how to vote in this matter to take into consideration the following points: 1. If the present opportunity of acquiring this land is missed, the chance of buying it will be gone for good. 2. The municipal authorities in a large number of New Zealand towns are wishing that they had, while it was yet possible, acquired more land for municipal purposes. We shall be sorry, too, if we do not buy this land now.

3. It is not proposed either now or in the near future to launch into any considerable expenditure in connection with this land—the present municipal offices can be made to serve for some time to come.

4. The car parking problem is rapidly becoming a major one in this city and the proposed use of part of Miller’s section as a parking area until it is required for other purposes will be a real benefit both to drivers and the general public.

5. Even if no revenue whatever can be obtained from the land, the cost to the ratepayers will be negligible (about 9-16ths of a penny in the pound) say Is lid for a property rated on an annual value of £4O.

6. Even if it subsequently turns out (which I am confident will never be the case) that the area is not wanted for municipal purposes, it is as certain as any future event can be that the city will not lose—the land must grow in value and will always fetch more than the present price.—I am etc. J. GLASGOW. Nelson, 3rd May.
