APATHY IN JAPAN “AS-YOU-WERE” POSITION EARLY PROGRESS RETURNS LUnited Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] TOKIO, Ist May. The elections for the Diet met with apathy. The general feeling is that the appeal to the country is artificial, and early returns suggest an “as-you-were” position. The anti-Government Liberal, Minseito, Agrarian and Seiyukai parties are miantaining their lead with 80 per cent, of seats. The chief change is that the Socialists are likely to be double their strength with 40 seats. LABOUR GAINS TOKIO, 2nd May. The final election results show that the Social Mass Party (Labour! won 19 additional seats, but the general line-up of Parliament is practically unchanged, indicating further trouble for the Hayashi Cabinet. The state of parties is as follows: Minseito, 179; Seiyukai, 175; Social Mass, 37; Skowkai (Government Members) 19; others. 46.
