MODEL FOR THE APOSTLES
Stories of Mr John Burns, the first working man to become a Cabinet Minister, arc related in "Great Thoughts” : On one of Ids rambles in London Mr Burns entered St. Paul’s Cathedral to sen what progress was being made with tlie mosaic cartoons. He found the artist at work and his opinion concerning the cartoons of the Apostles was sought. John Burns’ criticism was frank. “The Apostles are not robust enough. They look anaemic,” he said. “The Apostles were brawny fishermen, muscular out-of-doors men.’’ The artist agreed. After some discussion John Burns took off his coat and shirt, and stood in his vest and trousers as an artists’ model for the Apostles—gaining an anonymous immortality, since his figure is now represented on the walls of St. Paul’s Cathedral.
