PRICE OF RAW TOBACCO
BOARD OF TRADE REGULATION In a recent issue a Press Association message stated that the Board of Trade regulations fix the price of raw tobacco at Is 2d a pound, but the Minister may authorise the sale and purchase of tobacco at a lower price than that fixed if he considers it proper to do so.
Some growers in the district have interpreted the statement as though it were a fixed price for all tobacco. The complete text of the Regulation is:--No raw tobacco shall be sold by
the grower thereof or purchased from him at less than one shilling and twopence per pound free on
board ship Motueka or Nelson in the case of tobacco grown in the Nelson Provincial District, and in the case of tobacco grown in any other district at less than one shilling and twopence per pound free on board ship or free on rail at the port or railway-station which is nearest to the place at which such tobacco is grown.
