HUTT LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY MISS BETTS Brilliant golf in the semi-final and still more in the final of the Hutt Ladies’ Club’s open championship enabled Miss Betts, of Nelson, to carry off the trophy, states “The Post.” She defeated Miss D. Wilson (Titahi), 8 and 6, in the semi-final, and in the afternoon beat Mrs Foreman (Miramar), 3 and 2.

A large gallery followed the finalists. Conditions were ideal for golf, the afternoon being bright and sunny, with a light northerly breeze. Miss Betts made the gallery gasp by almost finding the green with a drive from the first tee (250 yards). Mrs Foreman failed to pick up her second, and Miss Betts drew 1 up by taking the hole in 4 to 5. She placed herself 2 Up by taking the second hole in bogey 5 to 6.

With the breeze behind her, Miss Betts was too strong with her tee shot at the third, her ball travelling down the bank beyond the green. Mrs Foreman played a nice pitch and took the hole in 4 to 5. A spanking drive and a firm iron shot saw Miss Belts on the edge of the fourth green, and she drew 2 up again in taking the hole in 4 to 5,

Mrs Foreman played a brilliant second at the fifth, which pulled up about four yards from the pin, while Miss Betts’s second found a btuiker to the right of the green. Mrs Foreman took the seventh hole in 4 to 5 by cannoning off her opponent’s bali iflto the cup. Faulty short work by both saw a half in 5, one over bogey, at the eighth (327 yards). A brilliant approach putt by Mrs Foreman landed her ball on the lip of the cup for three. Miss Betts was on in two, but putted too firmly, and missed the return, Mrs Foreman taking the hole in 4 to 5, and making them all square at the turn. Miss Betts usually outdrove Mrs Foreman by 40 yards, but the latter evened up round about the greens.

Miss Betts drew ahead at the fourteenth, Mrs Foreman missing a fivefoot putt.

It looked as if all was over when Mrs Foreman badly topped her brassie second at the fifteenth. Miss Betts, however, also had a bad lie, and made an even worse brassie shot than her opponent had done, topping her ball into tiger country. Mrs Foreman played a beautiful iron shot out of the rough, and she drew 2 up by taking the hole in 5 to 6. It was all over when Miss Betts found the green off the tee at the sixteenth, and Mrs Foreman hooked, her spoon tee shot into the grassy bunker to the left of the green, She Was a trifle strong }vith her chip, but Miss Betts was short With her approach putt. The latter, however, made ho mistake with a 10-foot putt, which gave her the hole in 3 to 4, and the championship 3 up and 2 to go.
