HOME-MADE NURSERY FITMENTS

Instead of spending much money on a fitted basket for the baby, make a substitute out of a cheap fibre suitcase. Enamel the outside to match the colour chosen for the nursery fittings, and when the. paint is dry, line the inside with harmonising chintz. Fit a big cardboard box lid inside the case, cover this also with chintz, and finish with a ribbon loop handle on each side, to form a useful tray. The lid of the suitcase can be painted with gay conventional flower garlands. When not in use, it might find a home on a little table, where it would make a bright splash, of colour in the nursery. Economy Ideas

Another good idea—turn an old-fashioned four-tiered “what-not” into a special baby-table. Enamel it to match the suitcase and hang chintz curtains on expanding wire rods all round the four open sides. When pulled across, the curtains will keep the contents free from dust and the shelves will be ideal for housing all the small accessories. Instead of purchasing a new low chair for bath time, cut down the legs of an old kitchen chair, enamel it to match the other fitments and complete with back and seat cushions of padded chintz.

A cheap folding clothes airer, enamelled and chintzcovered will serve as a draught screen during bath time. Several half-worn Turkish towels can be machined together in three or four thicknesses, dyed the desired colour, edged with double crochet in thick rug wool, and will form an efficient and attractive rug, to go under the bath to protect the carpet from splashes.—R.
