TWO UNUSUAL ACCIDENTS
MAN’S BEARD CAUGHT IN BICYCLE ELEPHANT FALLS FROM A SLING [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] (Received 29th April, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, 26th April. Two extraordinary accidents are reported. An elderly man while adjusting his bicycle chain on a lonely road near Holstead in Denmark found his beard had become entangled in the crank and he was unable to free himself. Another cyclist met him crawling backwards with the bicycle. Together they carried the bicycle until they met a man with a sharp knife who severed the beard. The second accident occurred at Calcutta. A 5i ton elephant, on which a mahout was mounted, fell from the sling in which he was being loaded on a ship. The elephant crashed to the wharf, sprang up trumpeting, began to run limping, and scattered a terrified crowd. The mahout, who miraculously escaped serious injury, declares that the elephant saved his life by deliberately rolling away from him.
