FRENCH BATTLEFIELDS
AUSTRALIANS’ DESIRE HONOUR FALLEN COMRADES LONDON 9th April. “All that remains to make this trip the epic of a lifetime is a visit in France to see the battlefields,” said a member of the Australian contingent in an interview to-day. Many of the contingent spent a long time in France and arc keen to renew associations and honour the graves of fallen comrades. “The trouble is that we realise our good fortune in being selected for the Coronation and are fully sensible of the privilege of representing Australia. Wc do not like to make a suggestion which would make it appear that we are never satisfied.” the man said.
The men, particularly the veterans, are greatly disappointed that no provision was made for a short lour of the battlefields. It is felt that would be a most appropriate climax to a wonderful experience. It has been suggested to the contingent that it should form an unofficial deputation to Mr Bruce and ask him to use his influence with the Government, but the men are reluctant to take any action which might be deemed ungracious or embarrass Mr Bruce or the Government.
