Roger Vernon, who is on trial charged with the murder of Max Kassel in London, after being reminded of his escape from Devil’s Island, described how he repeatedly asked Max to return a loan of £25. Eventually Max came to the flat in Soho. “Max arrived furious. I knew immediately he or I must be killed. He tried to strangle me. He tried to seize my pistol and it emptied itself by itself.”
