PROPOSED RODING TUNNEL
[To The Editor] Sir, —In yesterday’s issue of your paper Mr Foster Barham has paid me the compliment of wanting to know my opinion of the above highly important proposal. In reply I wish to assure Mr Foster Barham that I never join issues with a scientist especally one who must know a great deal more about the subject in question than I do. My old friend, Mr H. Pickup, knows his geology of which I possess only a little knowledge “this may be dangerous.” In addition he is a practical miner and fui'ther he has lived for many years adjacent to the proposed tunnel site. I am aware that he has time and again made a close examination of the geological composition of the hill through which the proposed tunnel will pass. Consequently the Nel- ' son ratepayers may rest satisfied that • Mr Pickup’s considered opinion of the quality of the rock which the proposed tunnel will pierce will prove to be substontially correct.
Every thinking indivdual n Nelson must be convinced that Nelson’s future very largely depends on the beautiful city possessing an ample supply of pure water also that the lives and prosperity of the people residing in the thickly populated districts of Richmond, Stoke, Wakatu and Tahuna is in jeopardy as they are lacking in the first essential for the welfare of any community viz., an abundant supply of good water. The Roding river is the only site near at hand where an ample supply of pure water can be secured for both Nelson and the suburban districts. The welfare and prosperity of town and country are inter-locked and inseparable consequently the Nelson ratepayers are well advised to vote solid in support of the City Council’s proposed Roding river water supply scheme. —I am, etc., R. PATTIE. Richmond, 27th April.
