Y.M.C.A. ACTIVITIES

OPENING OF THE 1937 GYMNASIUM SEASON

Once again the summer sports draw to a close and those who desire to keep fit look round lor the woollen sweater and the “gym.” togs in preparation for the winter classes in the gymnasium.

This year the “Y” is adding boxing and wrestling to its already attractive programme, and with JVIr Les Harris flyweight champion of Southland, at instructor of boxing, and Mr H. Muncaster (Nelson's scientific wrestler) in charge of the mat-work, it should be able to produce some good exponents of both sports before the end of the 1937 season.

Another innovation will be the holding of physical culture classes on Saturday morning for the benefit ol those who, as a result of the 40 hour week, have the morning to spare. This should prove a golden opportunity tc put in three-quarters of an hour’s work that will yield a handsome return in better health. Other classes for business men and ladies have been provided for, and later the inter-house basket ball competition that last year proved so popular, will be commencing on the Wednesday evening as usual. It is expected that basket-ball will this year have more teams entering than before, am it is interesting to note that Christchurch is now commencing this fine indoor-game on the same lines as Nelson. Hamilton in the North Island has 36 houses taking part in the game and this represents a total of 284 players participating in this one ac tivity in that town.
